Jacqueline and Sandy’s proposal in DUMBO began with a carefully planned question and quickly became something less controlled: surprise, relief, laughter, and the first few minutes of realizing they were engaged. Those reactions are the reason I photograph proposals with a documentary approach.
A Proposal Beneath the Manhattan Bridge
DUMBO offers an unmistakable New York setting, but the location should never overpower the moment. I chose a position that preserved the bridge and surrounding architecture while keeping my presence unobtrusive until the proposal had happened.
Photographing the Reaction First
There is no need to interrupt the first embrace or immediately turn a proposal into a portrait session. I give couples a few minutes to absorb what happened, then offer simple direction once they are ready. That balance protects the spontaneity while still creating a complete set of photographs.
Golden-Hour Portraits Around DUMBO
Afterward, we walked through the nearby streets and waterfront for portraits. The changing light, brick buildings, bridge views, and open riverfront gave the gallery variety within a compact area. The strongest images still came from Jacqueline and Sandy’s connection rather than the landmarks around them.
