Erika and Eric’s wedding at Whitby Castle moved easily between the wooded grounds, the stone architecture, and the ballroom inside. Rather than treating the venue as a backdrop alone, I photographed how they and their guests experienced it—the anticipation before the ceremony, the reactions during their vows, and the energy that built once everyone reached the reception.
Getting Ready at Whitby Castle
The opening part of the day was intentionally quiet. The getting-ready rooms provided clean window light for the final details, while the castle’s stone exterior established the setting without requiring Erika and Eric to travel elsewhere.
I keep this part of a wedding lightly directed. When a portrait needs structure, I will offer it, but I also leave room for the interactions that happen naturally between a couple, their families, and the people helping them prepare.
A First Look Beneath the Trees
Erika and Eric chose a shaded area of the property for their first look. It gave them privacy and a few uninterrupted minutes together before the ceremony. From there, we used the lawn, mature trees, and castle façade for portraits that felt connected to Whitby rather than overly staged.
An Outdoor Whitby Castle Ceremony
The ceremony took place outside with the castle and gardens surrounding the guests. I photographed it from both perspectives: close enough to preserve expressions and gestures, and wide enough to show why this setting mattered to them. Whitby also has indoor options, which makes it possible to adjust the photography plan without losing the character of the venue if the weather changes.
Family Portraits and the Ballroom Reception
The front lawn gave us an efficient place for family photographs before everyone moved inside. Once the reception began, the visual rhythm changed—from composed entrances and speeches to a busier dance floor. The ballroom’s architecture remained present, but the story stayed centered on Erika, Eric, and the people celebrating with them.
